Community Highlighted Campaigns
Missing Children Awareness and Prevention
On average, 2,185 children under the age of 18 were reported missing each day of the study year. That adds up to more than 797,500 children annually.Of that total, almost that 204,000, or about 25 percent, were family abductions. An estimated 58,200 were abducted by someone other than a family member.Of those, 115 were taken by complete or partial strangers and kept for a period or killed
Don’t forget your older children. Children aged 11 to17 are equally at risk.
Speak to your children calmly. Children do not need to be frightened to understand. Fear can reduce your chance of successfully educating your child, because fear can be paralyzing to a child.
Speak openly. Children will be less likely to come to you about issues if you do not appear open to the discussion topic. If they feel that you are comfortable discussing the subject, they may be more open to discussing tough subject matters with you.
Teach your children that safety is more important than manners. It is more important for a child to get out of danger than it is to be polite. They also need to know that it is okay to tell you what happened, and they won’t be tattletales.
Child Auto Safety
According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA), nearly 250,000 children are injured every year in car accidents.
This means that on any given day nearly 700 children are harmed due to accidents on our roadways. Of the 250,000 kids injured each year, approximately 2,000 die from their injuries. Children make up about 5% of total fatalities due to car accidents. In fact, for children between the ages of 2 and 14, motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death.
Internet Safety
DOES YOUR CHILD KNOW THE DANGER SIGNS OF A PREDATOR?
► Someone older (often much older) who spends hours chatting with them online
► Requests for personal information
► Someone who lies … especially about being younger
► Someone trying to drive a wedge between a child and their family
► Offers of jobs, money, and gifts that are too good to be true
► Offers or requests suggestive pictures
► Anyone who threatens them
Military Salute
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." - John Stewart Mill
Drunk Driving Awareness
This year, 10,839 people will die in drunk-driving crashes - one every 50 minutes.
High school students who use alcohol or other substances are five times more likely to drop out of school or believe good grades are not important
An average drunk driver has driven drunk 87 times before first arrest.
One in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetime.
Every minute, one person is injured from an alcohol-related crash.
50 to 75% of convicted drunk drivers continue to drive on a suspended license.
Teen alcohol use kills about 6000 people each year, more than all illegal drugs combined.
Anti Drug Abuse
16,000 deaths annually are due to illicit drug use, but this estimate is likely to be conservative as substance abuse is indirectly associated with deaths from diseases such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, tuberculosis, homicides, and other violent crimes and incidental injuries.
One in four US deaths can be attributed to alcohol, tobacco, or illicit drug use.
The economic burden of substance abuse to the USeconomy is estimated at a staggering $414 billion annually. Alcohol abuse alone costs nearly $166 billion each year.
Drug offenders account for more than one-third of the growth in the state prison population and more than 80 percent of the increase in the number of federal prison inmates since 1985.
Anti Bullying
It is estimated that 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students. Source: National Education Association.
Young bullies carry a one-in-four chance of having a criminal record by age 30. Study by Leonard Eron and Rowell Huesman.
One in seven students is either a bully or victim.
One out of 20 students has seen a student with a gun at school.
Bullying is the most common form of violence in our society; between 15% and 30% of students are bullies or victims.
Between 1994 and 1999, there were 253 violent deaths in school, 51 casualties were the result of multiple death events. Bullying is often a factor in school related deaths.
As a result, those involved in bullying may experience:
Poor academic performance and school failure
Poor mental and psychological health (e.g. depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, & behavioral problems)
Poor peer relationships
